Race for Life

Race for Life is the largest women-only fundraising event in the UK, and the biggest fight against cancer. There are almost 300 race for life events (5K and 10K runs) organised across the UK each year. The goal: to raise money for Cancer Research UK's groundbreaking work and to help save more lives.

A few enthusiastic women from my office, who were keen to support the cause, decided to take part in the 5 km run. And that’s how team Ummeed came into existence in 2012. And this is the third year that we have been a part of the fund raising event!

This year we had a “Chaat for charity” event in the office to raise funds. We setup chaat stalls, with the menu including sev puri, bhel puri, paani puri & dahi puri. A plate was modestly priced at £2, and considering that chaat is truly a delicacy in the UK, we had people in the office flocking to the stalls at snack time. We dished out over 150 plates, and managed to raise an awesome £150.

We raised some more funds through the Little Stars Reading club. You can read more about it on some of my other blog posts here

The experience during the actual day of the run is always overwhelming, to say the least. To see thousands of women come out and run in support of cancer research. To remember the near and dear ones they have lost, and to hope that there indeed will be a cure one day. And it is because of this hope that we actually called our team ‘Ummeed’! It represents what Cancer Research UK as a charity organisation stands for. It provides ‘hope’ to millions of people across the world.

Three cheers to all of us!

Sirisha
