At the little stars reading club, we had an interesting reading session with stories from the exciting, inspiring and wonderful world of colors..
"Color is joy. One does not think joy. One is carried by it. - Ernst Haas"
The books we read..
1. The day the crayons quit by Drew Daywalt with illustrations by Oliver Jeffers
It's funny, it's different, it's original and the illustrations are simply brilliant! It is also on the current shortlist for The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal for 2014 (The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people). The story is of a little boy Duncan who would like to draw, but instead of his box of crayons, he finds a stack of letters from each of his crayons, and every crayon has some kind of complaint. The book is a bit too wordy though to be read for 3 year olds, so that's why we teamed it up with an activity. As we read through the letters from each of the crayons, the little ones also explored their creativity by drawing something relevant to that color. It sure was a lot of fun! :-)
2. Elmer by David McKee
Anyone who has a keen interest in childrens picture books must surely have come across this one! Elmer is a patchwork elephant, who has a very colorful body with yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, blue, green, black and white arranged as a patchwork. And every one loves Elmer for his differences, and not in spite of them. The story is a wonderful way to teach young children how they can celebrate their own uniqueness.
3. The mixed up chameleon by Eric Carle
The magic of Eric Carle.. you cannot not love his picture books! This one is a simple story of a chameleon who thinks it's life is not exciting and wishes to be like each of the animals in a zoo. It has hilarious results when it starts looking like a little bit of this and a little bit of that. At the end, it however does realise that being yourself is the best choice! The illustrations are wonderful as with every Eric Carle's book, and the little ones had fun pointing out to the different colors. The part where the chameleon eats the fly got the most laughs! ;-) And just like the rainbow in the book, we also had the chance to look at a rainbow made out of balloons (thanks to a friend)!!
The craft work we did..
Simple colorful photo frames that the little ones decorated using colorful beads. Ain't they beautiful! And how lovely will they look, once the pictures are framed in! :-)
The funds we raised..
Last but not the least, we raised £25 for sight savers India.
Happy reading and story telling every one, until the next time!!
