Little Stars Reading Club - Gardening fun

29-Jun-2014
It is summer time and sure is time for some gardening!

That's what our reading session at the Little Stars Reading Club was about.

The books we read..

1. The listening walk by Paul Showers
Have you ever gone on a "listening walk"? You can go with somebody or by yourself. You don't talk, and you don't hurry, but keep still and listen. What will you hear? This picture book is intended for encouraging children to "listen" to the world around them! We had some fun  trying to be quiet and listen to the sounds around. We heard the birds, the wind and the cars, while my little pudding also heard her daddy walking down the stairs! :-)

2. Eddie's Garden: and How to Make Things Grow by Sarah Garland
What makes Eddie's garden grow? Earth, rain, sun and all sorts of creatures, of course! Eddie's garden is magnificent, from his stringy bean house to his tall sunflowers. How Eddie's garden grows and develops is clearly told in this gentle story with lively characters and colorful illustrations. I loved the idea of building a bean den, definitely something worth a try, maybe next summer! :-)

The little ones also had so much fun creating their own little flower gardens, albeit on paper! I had to choose something simple keeping in mind that most of them were 3 year olds, and I wanted that they do most of the bits by themselves... so used cupcake cases for flowers and stuck some seeds in the middle, and then cut out pieces from foam paper for the stem and leaves.  We also used a heart shaped paper punch to make the wings of the butterfly!

The third book we had planned to read was 'Planting a rainbow' by Lois Ehlert, but the little ones were so involved with the craft, and then couldn't wait to go out to do some actual gardening. So we didn't really get the chance!

The gardening fun..

Look at our upcycled "chi-chi" (christened by my little pudding) planters that we used for planting some seeds ;-) We also had some normal planters in which the little ones planted the beautiful marigold plants. Something to take home and take care of!

As always, last but not the least, we raised money for charity as well.

Happy reading and gardening, everyone!
