Little Stars Reading Club - Toys

27-Jul-2014
Toys! Toys! Toys! Stories about toys are almost like a double bonanza for kids, isn't it!?

This month, we had 'Toys' as the theme for the reading session at the Little Stars Reading Club..

The books we read..

Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson

A string of paper dolls go on a fantastical adventure through the house and out into the garden. They soon escape the clutches of the toy dinosaur and the snapping jaws of the oven-glove crocodile, but then a very real pair of scissors threatens. A stunning, rhythmical story of childhood, memory and the power of imagination! Julia Donaldson is simply awesome and her books are definitely not to be missed! She has been conferred the MBE and also has been the Children's Laureate from 2011 to 2013.

And of course, we had to make our own paper dolls, which was lots of fun :-)

Ollie and the Lost Toy by Lucy Richards

Ollie and Snaily do everything together, from making paper rockets to building sandcastles. So when Ollie can't find his favorite toy anywhere, he's inconsolable. That night, he remembers where he left Snaily…but it's dark and scary outside. Will Ollie be brave enough to rescue his beloved toy? This is a really sweet and reassuring life-the-flap story that's exciting for children!

Where Are You, Mr Moo by Julia Seal

A little girl Bella loses her favorite toy, Mr Moo and is devastated. But as she remembers all the fun things that she did with him during the day, like visiting the zoo, the play park, the fair et al. she realizes that he had been hiding in the car all along.

We had Rhea, one of our older 'Little Stars' read the book, and the little ones really enjoyed it that didi was reading to them :-)

We teamed up all the reading with some craft as well. We made toy windmills, that thankfully also worked brilliantly! ;-) This toy took me back down the memory lane, as it is so ubiquitous to your childhood. It is such a simple toy, but can provide hours of fun!

Toys are such an important part of the growing up journey. No child should have to go through childhood without any toys, but sadly there are millions of them the world over that do. So this time, we asked the little ones to give away a few of their toys, so that we could get it to someone who didn't have any. You would think 3 year olds' wouldn't really comprehend the thought behind it, but they do, they definitely do! We donated all the toys collected to the children's ward at the MK hospital.

Happy reading everyone!
