It's always good to stay connected to your roots, no matter where you choose to live your life! As they say, there are two things that you should give your child, one is roots and the other is wings!
The 'Stories from India' session at the Little Stars Reading Club was an attempt to introduce the young kids to our culture. And also to share our new found love for picture books by Indian publications!
About the books we read..
Ranganna by Arthi Anand & Kavita Singh (Publication: Tulika)
Ranganna is a sprightly little elephant who lives near the dhobhi ghat. He loves colours and is enchanted by the coloured nails of two little girls, who are his best friends! But whoever heard of an elephant wearing nail polish?! :-) A simple & endearing tale, and the illustrations are so brilliant as well. You are bound to fall in love with Ranganna!
After all the excitement with Kumbhakarna, we actually managed to read 2 more books..
Mala's silver anklets by Annie Besant & Nancy Raj (Publication: Tulika)
Toto and the rainy day rescue from The adventures of Toto the Auto (Publication: FunOKPlease)
And last but not the least, the craft work was to create the Indian flag with grains. The activity was much enjoyed and appreciated, definitely a more interesting way to create a flag than coloring one with crayons! :-) After all, more the mess more the kids love it!!
For the charitable cause, we decided to pledge our donations to 'Teach for India'.
Until the next time, happy reading everyone!

Junior Kumbhakarna by Arundhati Vankatesh & Shreya Sen (Publication: Tulika)
A little boy Kukku loves to be read the story of Kumbhakarna every night at bedtime. The story is about the giant Kumbhakarna who loves to eat and sleep. He sleeps so much that nothing really can wake him up, from braying donkeys to conches to elephants walking over him! :-) A funny retelling of the anecdote from the Ramayana!
We teamed the reading of this book with an activity. I was actually scouring the internet for some related activities but couldn't really find anything interesting. Then one fine day, I was enlightened! :-) One of my really rare original ideas when it comes to craft.. Lol! I came up with the idea of having a huge poster of Kumbhakarna pinned up on the wall, which the kids could then decorate with gems and embellishments. They did have so much fun crowding around the poster and adorning his crown and jewellery. And thanks to hubby for doing such a brilliant job with the drawing of our own Kumbhakarna!
