For our annual celebration at the reading club, here are the books we read and this is what we did!!
'The Tiny Seed' by Eric
Carle
Eric Carle's classic story of the life cycle of a flower is
told through the adventures of a tiny seed. With striking collage illustrations
and simple, yet dramatic text, it is apt to introduce young readers to the life
cycle of a plant. When the tiny seed is blown away from its parent plant, it
travels a very long way - overseas, deserts and mountains. The tiny seed
survives the hazards of the journey and finally falls onto fertile earth. It
grows and grows, becoming the tallest, biggest flower for miles around. Then
one day the wind blows and thousands of the flower's seeds begin their own
journeys. There is also another heartening message to take away, that of
the tiny seed's steadfast perseverance in the face of many hazards and
obstacles until its final joyful success.
We teamed up the book reading with a related activity –
craftwork to depict the lifecycle of a plant in its simplest form! Used some
seeds, cotton wool for clouds, finger prints to depict rain, brown wool as
soil, a yellow button for a sun, and finally a stick-on flower and a visitor
(butterfly)! :-)
Must admit, the kids as always seemed to enjoy the craftwork more than the book
reading!
'Mad about Minibeasts'
by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz
What a fantastic book about bugs that we can find in our
gardens. There is a simple rhyme explaining the characteristics of each of the
minibeasts! In simple lyrical text, the rhymes are full of humour and great to
read aloud. From snails and slugs, to bees and butterflies, the kids were
totally engaged throughout. The bright and colourful illustrations add to the
pleasure of reading and listening!
To complement this book, we took the children out on a spring
walk to a nearby lake. Not only was it a leisurely and fun walk, but they were
also on a mission to spot the 8 different objects listed on the nature-card!
Also as it was our annual celebration, we played picture
bingo (with a spring theme)! Bingo, the ever popular game, is always a hit with
little ones. They were delighted to receive goodie bags as well at the end of
it! :-)
If you fancy playing bingo on a lazy Sunday afternoon at
home with kids, check out:

All in all, a Sunday well spent.
And
our reading club is a year old now, yeahhhh! :-)
